Neck Scarfs… The Popularity of Scarves

Neck scarves are everywhere!  Everything in this world has its origin and history etched into the sands of time. As you take a look back at the history of silk scarves, you gain a better perspective and understanding. It helps everyone give more appreciation for the object that is being scrutinized. A scarf is no exception to this rule.

Surprisingly, it has been noted by historians that these pieces of cloth first appeared nearly half a millennium ago. Back in early Europe, womens scarves started out as mere handkerchiefs that were used by people. In an effort to make it easier to carry around, they started tying it around their waists and necks. Soon after, people saw the practicality of doing and all followed suit.

Years later, this accessory moved all over Europe and found many different uses. For some, it was used as a means of distinguishing groups of people. Depending on the color of the fabric, your neck scarf will be labeled under a certain category.  Several hundred years later, scarves soon became a fashion accessory for most people. Not only did it appeal to the fashion-savvy people of the nineteenth century but it also had its practical use as it protected people from the cold weather.

Today, scarves can be found bearing many cultures around the world as people have adopted it to fit their fashion sense and lifestyles. Of course, for all the different cultures out there, some have put their own unique twist in an effort to make their kind of scarf unique and different from the rest.

In the colder regions of the world, thick woolly kinds are very popular since they insulate the body from cold weather very well. Obviously, that kind would not be used in tropical places as it would be unbearably hot. For the hotter regions though, clothing manufacturers have come up with cotton and polyester versions of this fashion accessory which is much thinner and cooler. This gave more people the opportunity to incorporate scarves into their style and outfits.

Other kinds vary in terms of their shapes and sizes. There are square ones like those used by cowboys and bandits in the movies and television. There are those that are made of different fabrics or extra large ones that can be wrapped all over the body. Designers and manufacturers have gotten creative in order to continuously come out with new styles.

As long as there are creative people looking to pour in their ideas and consumers always looking for something new, this industry does not look like it will slow down any time soon.

Another reason why a scarf has become so popular in today’s world is because of its simplicity. Basically, it is just an elongated piece of fabric that is not very difficult to manufacture. Unlike before when everything was hand woven, today’s machines can easily mass produce these fashion accessories. Couple that with a steady demand from consumers and it makes sense why it is such a hot item today.

On top of all that, it helps that big name celebrities usually accessorize heavily and scarves are common sight. With the youth today closely following celebrities’ lives, they tend to also imitate them. So, if they see that they’re favorite actors or singers are using a certain kind of fashion accessory, you can bet they will want the same thing. There are many other reasons as to why scarf has become such a popular item today but it does not take a genius to figure it out.
